The Art Galleries of Sydney

Wednesdays, 11am -1pm
7 Sessions, First Session, Wednesday 4th August 2010
Tutor: Dr Garry Darby

This course will consist of seven visits to Sydney’s major public and private art galleries. The aim is to investigate the wonderful permanent collections and changing exhibitions that make up the dynamic art scene in Sydney. Week by week we will investigate galleries such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the dealer galleries in places such as Paddington, and other galleries throughout the city. The student will become much more familiar with the great masterpieces held in large collections and at the same time gain an understanding of the dynamic contemporary art scene. The course provides a unique opportunity to come to terms with all forms of art and at the same time learn a great deal more about the great city of Sydney

Aboriginal Art Master Classes

Tuesdays 10.30am – 12.30pm
6 Sessions, First Session, Tuesday 3rd August. 2010

Tutor: Dr Garry Darby

This course is designed for students who have completed my basic Aboriginal Art course. It is intended as a follow-on where students will be asked to contribute in “tutorial” situations. This will entail giving a short talk to your fellow students on a subject of your choice and presenting an essay, again on a subject of your choice.  Additionally I will be presenting lectures that will discuss important aspects of the history of Aboriginal art in Australia. The aim here will be to take studies to a more ‘serious’ level. One gallery visit will be included and one or two industry figures will be invited to speak.  Class numbers will be limited.

Australian Art and Artists*
WEA… Course Outline
Tutor Dr Garry Darby
10.30am -12.30 pm

1. Aboriginal Art (Tuesday 2nd Feb.2010)

We explore the development and history of indigenous art in this country. Under consideration will be the mythologies, techniques and regional styles. Desert art, Bark painting and art from other areas such as the Tiwi islands and the Kimberley will be discussed.

2. The Colonials (Tues 9th Feb 2010)
Our first European artists were ship’s officers and convicts. Art was made from the time of the first fleet with a rich heritage of work being built up during the following  seventy years. Conrad Martens and John Glover were major figures of this period.

3. The Heidelberg School (Tuesday 16th Feb)
Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton were key members of this very important movement, the most popular in the history of art here. Fred McCubbin and Charles Conder were painters of genius and their work will be examined in the context of the times.

4. Bohemians in the Bush and Heidelberg Women (Tuesday 23rd Feb)
Although founded in Melbourne, some of the Heidelberg group’s best work was made in Sydney by Roberts and Streeton. The fascinating story of their bohemian lives here will be told and illustrated with photographs and paintings. Women artists of the Heidelberg era have largely been neglected in our art history. Today we will look also at Jane Sutherland, Clara Southern, Emma Minnie Boyd and other women to ‘complete the picture’.

5. Modernist Women (Tuesday 2nd March)
Modern art in Australia begins with the work of Grace Cossington Smith. Margaret Preston was also prominent, but this session explores the work of Dorrit Black, Ethyl Spowers, Adelaide Perry, Grace Crowley and lesser-known but significant painters of the period. A session entirely devoted to Modernist Women.

6. Modernism and Post Modernism (Tuesday 9th March)
From the 1940’s onwards Australia produced a string of wonderful and innovative painters. Names such as Drysdale, Dobell, Nolan, Boyd, Tucker and Perceval spring to mind. We follow the progress of modernism through Lloyd Rees, Brett Whiteley and John Olsen up to the present day.
Art Gallery of NSW (Tuesday 16th March)
TODAY WE MEET AT THE ART GALLERY OF NSW (information desk 10.30am)
Our mission today will be o look at works in the permanent collection of the AGNSW. This will serve as a very effective review of the course.
